Julie's Back!
Julie Christie. Back in London where she, more than anyone, has boosted the image of British girls sky high. Back for the premiere of Far From The Madding Crowd (on Monday, October 16), her latest film.
One reason you may not have missed her is that since her performances in Darling and Billy Liar, the country has suddenly been swarming with Christie copies - long-haired, wide-eyed streaks of girls with a sixties' view on life. And all over the country, she still looks sadly down from billboards as Zr. Zhivago's Lara.
Julie Christie, 26, was the original bird. And still is. In spite of - to coin a phrase - international stardom and an Oscar.
She's been in San Francisco all summer filming Petulia. "I lived on a houseboat there and loved every minute of it. San Francisco is a wonderful city and everyone there was so friendly and easy-going. But I was homesick for London."
She's hoping now to find time to get her new London house in Fulham in order. And she's made it quite in order for an international film star to live in good old Fulham.
She's filling her home slowly with junky-type treasures she finds in out of the way antique shops: a grandfather clock, a penny-farthing bike, a button-back chair, Victorian musical boxes and all sorts of weird and wonderful pieces of Victoriana.
"It'll probably take me years to finish furnishing the house - it's a long-term hobby really," said Julie. "I don't buy super stuff that costs the earth - those prices make me reel back in horror. I go for Victorian junk. Slightly weird, rather than pretty things."
